Ju-Yi Chia: Echoes of Itoshima

Artist-in-Residence Exhibition @ Studio Kura, Fukuoka, Japan

2512 Verticals in Prussian Blue_2.jpg

Echoes of Itoshima is a body of work born from quiet walks, slow observations, and sustained attentiveness to the landscape—its drifting light, skeletal trees, shifting winds, and the stillness in between. A space of solitude, resonance, and return evokes a sacred presence and invites a subtle attunement to its rhythms.

Through on-site perceptual reflection, Ju Yi gathers impressions from natural elements—not to depict them, but to explore their expressive potential. These visual studies unfold through experimental processes on paper: layering pencil, acrylic, and gel ink pens, alongside gestures of abrasion and erasure. In this process, the paper is treated not merely as a surface, but as a living membrane—capable of absorbing, resisting, and remembering. It becomes both a receptive skin and a resistant terrain, each mark a negotiation between control and surrender, form and formlessness.

Ju Yi’s works resonate as meditative traces of encounter. They arise from a quiet tremor between the soul and the land—where all form recedes into the breath of presence.
